I wouldn’t define a neat person as someone who always has their house, car, or office perfect. Because I don’t have everything together all the time! But I do consider myself a very neat individual. I would say a neat person is someone that strives to stay organized and on top of things as best as possible. They have habits that create an organized life.
If you want to get things cleaned up and keep it that way (most of the time!) here are a few things you should do.

Habits of a Neat Person
They have a home for everything.
I’ve noticed my home gets the most chaotic when I don’t know where to put everything. Piles build up and I lose motivation to tackle it as my things multiply. I use bins, baskets, and hooks to create homes for things. My sons small toys are organized into bins, my purses and my husbands baseball caps hang on hooks, and small items in draws are organized into baskets! when I know where to put something, the clutter stays controlled!
They go through their stuff regularly.
When you collect a lot of stuff it becomes hard to create homes for everything. A house only has so much space! I go through small areas of my home at least once a week. This week it was my purses, last week it was my sons toys, this week I’m going through our stuff in the garage!
They tidy up often.
I don’t deep clean every room everyday. I will pick up stray toys and put them away as I walk through the house. Or I’ll wipe down the counter in the bathroom after I do my makeup. I do a little something in every room throughout the day to prevent a huge mess from forming.
They wash, fold, and put away laundry in the same day.
I use to dread folding laundry. Then I timed myself to see how long it really took…10 minutes to fold and put away! 10 minutes. That’s it! Now I do it as soon as I can to prevent baskets from piling up for days. (clothes aren’t as wrinkled either!)
They do make time to deep clean regularly.
Throughout the month I take time to deep clean each room in our house. I don’t deep clean the whole house at once! I will deep clean one room and get to the others another day.
They don’t collect paper and useless items.
I go through my paperwork once a week. In college I did it every other day! If I need it, I’ll put it in a file. If I don’t need it, it goes in the trash.
They don’t let dishes pile up.
I unload the dishwasher as soon as I can. I also load it throughout the day instead of waiting until everything piles up! It looks neater and is less intimidating. There’s nothing I want to do less at the end of the day than load a sink full of dishes.
Being neat doesn’t just make living in a home more pleasant, it also reduces stress. Just be careful that you don’t become obsessive about cleaning. I’ve been there. It’s not fun for you or anyone else. Balance is key (to anything really)!
